I'm sorry it's taken so long, but here are some pics I snapped at our trip to see "Captain Bree."

It pays to be early!

In fact....







We were so early that Mr. Layne took us on a tour of the U's campus. We took in the lovely landscape and even saw the beautiful murals in the Park Building.







Finally, it was time to go inside. The Cubmaster laid down the rules for all the boys and also explained the historical importance of theater.

He's a smart one!





Places, everyone! Once the show started, the boys really got a kick out of whole performance experience.

Best of all, there was even a song where the audience could sing along!




All in all a great trip. We've got to do this again.

Take a Bowl on the Pitch!!! (10-11-08)

It's always fun to watch the boys try something new.
At this Den Meeting, we had the chance to try our hands at the distinguished art of Cricket.

Needless to say, we were anything but eloquent and artistic. But the boys tried their best and had a lot of fun experimenting with this new sport and testing their mettle in one of the most widespread sports across the world.


They all did great, just take a look...

As with most new things, we started off with a little training and basic instruction on how the game is played.







Add in a little demonstration from the Chief and myself and soon they were off to the races!







The guys got a real kick out of having to coordinate their fielding and coverage...








But they all agreed that batting was the best part of the game!








Yeah, aiming was a learned skill for the majority of the Cubs.


But once they got it down there was no stopping them.

Not too shabby for their first time, eh?

8/23/08 - END OF SUMMER BBQ

Last Saturday was the End of Summer BBQ for our den! A lot of kids were out of town for the last hurrah of summer, but those who were hear came by the M.T.'s and learned to make foil dinners.

Which were then put on the grill.









Everyone really enjoyed their meal!










And afterward, there was plenty of time to play and pose for a couple of photographs!

8/16/08 - FRISBEE

A couple Saturdays ago, the boys learned to play ultimate Frisbee! It was a small group, but everyone did great and had a lot of fun, even playing a game against the adults!

Unfortunately, pictures are a little scarce for this meeting because my camera died only a few minutes in. Sorry everyone!





The boys all lined up to learn how to catch frisbees...











....And soon enough they had really caught on!

Building Our Faith...(8-9-08)

This past Saturday, our guys got together for their Faith in God lesson presented by ADL L.W.
The lecture was very uplifting and included a little homework assignment for the boys, too.

Afterward, the boys exercised their craft muscles and made Paratroopers using coffee filters, string, scotch tape and plastic toy soldiers. They were really into it.

Before the lesson started, the boys were awarded their Den Doodle beads and updated their strings.

D.S. used the time before the lesson to enjoy the shade!









Once the lesson began, the boys gave Mr. Layne the quiet respect he deserved and paid attention to his words.

The class was uplifting.




But once it was over, jump school was in session!


The upper rim of the amphitheater served as the perfect proving ground for our parachutists.








J.M. went for the high ground to give his jumper maximum air time.








S.W. thought it was such a good idea, he jumped right alongside him!








D.S. had a little technical difficulty with his paratrooper. I tried to tell him that the order was chute-string-man, but he insisted upon chute-man-string. Oh well.






Paratroopers learn to have faith in their equipment before they ever step out of an aircraft. As such, they know for certain their chute will open when they exit.

The practice of having faith in God is a comfort every scout should nurture and develop. That way they'll never feel alone when life's little obstacles get in their way. And that way, they'll be certain that God will be there when times get tough.

BACKDATED - Cycling!

We worked on bike safety so the boys could get their Cycling Beltloop. They learned signals and safe behavior when on a bike and some basics on how to keep their bikes in good shape so they'd always be safe to use.

And then they were off, taking a short tour around the medical campus area! Everyone did great!

BACKDATED - Basketball!

The boys practiced and showed off their skills a couple weeks ago when we earned the Basketball Beltloop! They even participated in a real game at the end of the meeting.






T.Z. gave the boys some instructions and had them practice long before the game was started.











Then they split into teams: The Pirates and the Dragons!

BACKDATED- Community Service!

Sorry that I've been so behind on posts, everyone, but I'm slowly catching up! There's one more backdated entry to come, then we'll be all caught up!

Here's from a few weeks ago. The scouts were sent out to Shorline Ridge and the Medical Towers areas to do some clean up on the grounds. It was a small turnout, but they did an excellent job!

Understanding Our History (7-19-08)...

For this meeting the boys got together to visit one of the University's best kept secrets, the Fort Douglas Museum.

We picked the perfect day for the trip. The weather was hot, but bearable. And the soft breeze coming out of the mountains really helped cool things off.

The museum was divided into inside and outside sections. Sadly, I was unable to take any inside pictures due to the small spaces and having to keep up with the guys.

But I did make sure that some pics got snapped outside. Take a look for yourself!

The Cubs were really excited to get inside and take it all in.








Eventually, our tour made its way to the outer artillery park.








Outside, we talked about the different components of an artillery piece and what kind of work went into firing a cannon.







Being an ex-artillery guy myself, this section was one of my favorites.








The guys really dug the park, too. They asked a ton of questions and really immersed themselves in the military history.








Admittedly, some of them just enjoyed the shade.












I believe the boys really got something out of this trip. The museum was steeped in the rich military tradition of Utah. Best of all, the museum was close by, the price was right and hopefully the memories will last all their lives.

1, 2, 3... HIKE! (6-1-08)

Hello everyone! First off, my apologies for the delay in this most recent blog post. The blog has officially switched hands, and it's now the responsibility of myself, A.D.L. Meg F. I'm sorry in advance if things are a bit clunky as I grow accustomed to the system.

That said, last Saturday was an exciting meeting! Corey Seuili of the Utah Utes joined us to help the boys learn the basics of flag football, and everyone did great. Once again, we have a large assortment of photos to show how great the boys did!
