(Ok, let's give this another shot.)
Our next den meeting will be this Thursday (11-01-07) at 6:30 pm.
We'll be meeting at the LDS Ward on Wasatch Drive.
Now hear this!
It's time for a team-building activity...
We'll be meeting in the ward gym to play some Broom-ball!
It's just like ice hockey but without the pads, pucks and ice.
It will also earn the boys an arrow point, too! Specifically, E4f (WHB, p. 131).
My only requests are that the boys:
- bring a broom (just like the one you sweep your kitchen with)
- a pair of gloves (to protect their hands)
- dress for physical activity (t-shirts, sweats and sneakers)
Parents, bring some gym clothes and join the fun!
It's sure to be a great time.
And who knows?
If this takes off, we can invite the West Village Den to join us next time!
See you there!
Please e-mail me if there are any questions.

Tool Time (10-27-07)
Saturday's Den Meeting was an absolute hit.
Our ADL put on a great class and helped the boys learn a ton about hand tools and their uses.
For their building project, the guys built do-it-yourself pneumatic rocket launchers. They were really excited and eager to get their hands busy with the tools. And even though it sometimes took a bullhorn to get them to listen to instructions, they all played it safe and paid attention when it counted. In the end, all the Cubs were able to check off Wolf Achievement #5.
But a picture's worth a thousand words:
Here's a group picture taken before the meeting started.
Look at all those smiles!
The first part of the class consisted of learning the different tools and their functions...
...Like how to pull a nail with a hammer.
...Or how to use a screwdriver.
Even the Cubmaster got in on some of the fun by helping out with instruction.
When the time finally came to start building the launch pads, the boys were all ears.
Everyone worked hard and did their best!
Here's M.G.P. with the near-final product.
J.W. works diligently on his base.
Here's some of the boys gathering close for a demonstration.
And of course, what would a work day be without a couple of breaks in between? ;-)
All in all, it was a great day.
The Cubs participated in a great activity and afterwards thanked the ADL for his hard work.
Before I go, I wanted to thank Cub Scout A.H. for his excellent work as Den Bannerman. His dedication to responsibility ensured that the Den Flag made it to every meeting possible and was cared for in between.
Now, the mantle of Den Bannerman has been passed to a different Cub for the month of November. And I have no doubt that he'll continue to uphold the high standards set by this very important duty.
Take care of our flag, S.W.
We're counting on you!

Pack Meeting 10-23-2007
Last night, the Pack held its first meeting with D.L. at the helm!
In spite of a few hitches, the event was a hit.
We were especially glad to welcome Mr. Vince Bath from the GSLC. He not only set up a Space Derby demo, but he also brought a free derby rocket for each child in attendance!
Thank you, Mr. Vince!
The boys were eager to get rocketeering. But before we could start, everyone was served a heaping helping of safety and instruction.
Finally, it was time to test them out!
Getting the rocket wound up and on the wire turned out to be a bit tricky.
But once the boys got the hang of it, they were off to the races!
By the end of the night, there was a room full of youthful smiles and only a few missing fingers.
The boys really enjoyed themselves in spite of the occupational hazards of Space Derby. ;-)
As for the recruitment drive, I'm pleased to say that at least two new boys were brought into the fold. I'm not too sure as to which Den they'll be assigned to, but the Pack has grown nonetheless!
Kudos and thanks must go to all the folks that came together to make this happen. So to the Pack Leaders and Mr. Vince, we say "Take a bow!"
Ok, back to business...
This week's Den Meeting will be held this Saturday (Oct. 27) at the home of our beloved Assistant Den Leader, L.W. Starting time will be 10:00 am.
We'll be learning all about hand tools, tool safety and working with wood. (Cool, no?)
The activity will fill the requirement for Wolf Achievement #5, "Tools for Fixing and Building." (WHB, pp. 64-69)
The weather should be brisk, but pleasant. Make sure to bundle up.
Our ADL lives in the Medical Plaza Townhouses at the base of the Medical Towers.
Check your e-mail for more detailed directions.
I hope to see you all there.
Oh, before I forget!
Along with the announcement and directions for this week's Den Meeting, I'll also be sending out an advanced four-week schedule for all of the Den's upcoming activities.
Please e-mail me with any questions, comments or concerns.
Toodleloo!

Stood Up and Rained Out
I'd like to apologize to everyone that showed up for our non-existent Broom-Ball Den Meeting this morning.
While I'm not certain as to why our contact never showed up, I can say that I'm appreciative of all the scouts, parents and other family members that braved the cold rain for a chance to have fun and try something new.
Broom-ball's sure to be a great experience whenever we get around to it. I'm going to keep it on the Den to-do list for a later date.
Alright, back on task.
This Tuesday (10-23-07) will be our monthly Pack Meeting. It will be held at the East Village Community Center (E.C.C.) at 7:00 pm and will coincide with a huge recruitment drive being put on by Council HQ. There's going to be a ton of activities and information for prospective Cub Scouts, so I urge each of our boys to bring along a friend that might enjoy being a part of the greatest Cub Pack in Utah.
If that isn't cool enough, the Council and District representatives will set up a Space Derby track to demonstrate just one of the fun activities kids can enjoy when they're a Cub Scout.
It's bound to be a ton of fun. I hope to see you all there!

YAHTZEE!!!
Yahoo!
I'm pleased to announce that this weekend's Den Meeting will proceed as planned.
This is largely due to the generosity of Ms. Robin Gochnour, an administrator at Vincent's school who's agreed to let us use the school gym on Saturday!
That being said, we will be meeting at the The Carmen B. Pingree School for Children with Autism located on the corner of Guardsman and Sunnyside. Here's a map!
Vincent and I will probably arrive a little early to gain access to the building.
Hope to see you all there!

Uh-oh...Scheduling Problems!!!
Whoopsie...
It looks like I've prematurely scheduled the meeting during another event at the church. Sorry, everyone!
(Special thanks to G.D. and R.S. for the head's up!)
Oh well. In hopes of atoning for this blunder, I'm currently trying to secure another gym-ish venue to play in.
So here's the deal...
We're going to maintain the current scheduled time and activity.
As soon as I've secured a venue, I'll send out an e-mail with a location, directions and a supplemental phone call to ensure everyone gets the news.
In the horrible event that I can't find a spot, I'll just do the same thing but include additional information on the new activity we'll be doing.
It's going to take a couple of weeks for me to get back in the groove.
I apologize for the mix-up, everyone.

Badge Recall
***ANNOUNCEMENT***
As of today, the Boy Scouts of America are recalling the Immediate Recognition badges and beads due to a high content of lead. (Read the article here.)
For our Den, I'd like for every parent to collect the IR Placard from their Cub and turn it over to a Cub Scout Leader as soon as possible. (Tonight's meeting would be a great opportunity.) From here, the Den leaders will hang on to them until we receive instructions from the Great Salt Lake Council on what steps to take next.
If there are any questions, please contact a leader.
Thank you in advance for your compliance.

Hello, everyone!
Sadly, V.Z. and I will be out of town for the next few days. (We're off to Moab!)

Date and time will be this Friday, October 5 at 6:30 p.m. (Parking is free after 6 p.m.)
Have fun, guys. I look forward to hearing about it next week.
